At the end of 2019, 2DII conducted around 100 mystery shopping visits at various branches of 12 French banks.

In partnership with the AMF, 2DII devised three key visitor profiles:

  • A 30-year-old man with a strong interest in responsible investment
  • A 45-year-old woman, risk-averse and curious about responsible investment
  • A 45-year-old man who is a risk-taker and wants high financial returns on his investments

The purpose of these visits was to observe how financial advisors responded to investors’ ESG objectives.

Our study focused on the interview process, from the suitability questionnaire to the advisor’s final recommendation.

The preliminary results reveal that only 1% of financial advisors ask clients about their ESG objectives without being prompted.

Additionally, even if advisors take these objectives into account once identified, our study shows that advisors still do not take into account certain key questions, such as proof of the impact of their investments in the real economy.
